Animal Care

We don’t have any dumb clucks at Willamette Egg Farms! That’s because we know that wholesome eggs begin with healthy hens, and without healthy hens we’re not going to have happy customers. Our goal is to satisfy our customers by providing them the highest quality products, and the best way to do this is by having healthy hens.

In fact, Willamette Egg Farms made the comfort, safety and health of our hens a high priority when we started operations over 75 years ago. And that’s why today we are in total compliance with the industry’s most stringent standards. These standards, set forth by the United Egg Producers (UEP) are the Animal Husbandry Guide, and ensure our flocks are well-cared for, protected and provide high-quality, safe and fresh eggs for consumers.

An independent Scientific Advisory Committee for Animal Welfare implemented the Animal Husbandry Guidelines in 2002. Commissioned by the United Egg Producers, the committee included US Department of Agriculture officials, university researchers and humane-association members. The subsequent guidelines have been reviewed and endorsed by the Food Marketing Institute and the National Council of Chain Restaurants.

UEP’s Animal Welfare Guidelines clearly define the best practices for healthy hens. As a long-time member of UEP, Willamette Egg Farms adheres to the following:

  • Housing & space allowance – ensures sufficient space to prevent aggressive behavior and stress from crowding

  • Production practices – enhances laying efficiency without jeopardizing the health of our hens

  • Handling & transportation – prevents discomfort or distress during the hen’s life cycle

Willamette Egg Farms adheres to the United Egg Producers Certified animal care certification standards. This certification indicates our operations meet or exceed all standards for animal care and health.

Willamette Egg Farms makes responsible decisions about the well-being of our hens. Indeed, it is in our farm’s best interest to adhere to the highest standards of animal care. We’ve adopted animal welfare guidelines based on scientific research, and assure consumers that the environment provided for our hens is safe, humane and disease-free.

When everything is said and done, our business is all about eggs. As egg farmers, we know healthy, well-treated hens in a safe environment produce the best quality eggs – and that’s what we provide our customers.
